Step-By-Step Paper Piecing Guide
This short, easy-to-follow, 6-minute video (below) will guide you through each key step. Make sure to pause the video to give yourself ample time to complete each task. If you have any questions, contact me.
Before we begin, make sure you have your:
Craft Kit
Scissors
Paper glue or glue gun with glue sticks
Markers (black, red, pink and brown)
White coloured pencil
Plastic bag to keep your work area clean
NB: Allow each piece to dry entirely before moving on to the next piece.
Now that you have all the necessary items, let’s start with Package A
Colour inside the bunny’s mouth with your brown marker. Use pink for the tongue and white colored pencil for the teeth.
Use your red marker for the bunny's nose and black for its eyes (0:16s).
The butterfly wings are separated into 4 parts and each wing has two pieces to put together. Using your glue, stick the first two halves together. Make sure the shorter piece is at the top while the longer piece is at the bottom. Repeat this step for the next half of the butterfly’s wing. (0:19s)
After both pieces of the butterfly wings are stuck together and dried. Glue both halves together in the center. Do not place glue on the entire wing. You are only placing glue on the tip where both halves would create the center of the butterfly. When the glue is completely dried, open the wings to better shape your butterfly. (0:30s)
Stick the tip of the butterfly’s center behind the left cheek of the bunny. Make sure the wings are showing (0:33s).
Stick the inside of the bunny’s foot on the left foot. With your black marker, darken the separating curved lines for the toes (0:45s).
On the bunny’s ears, use your scissors and cut along the curved line that separates the ears. Cut halfway up the ear; you are not separating the ears.
Stick the inside of the bunny’s ear on the first ear. When it’s completely dried, attach the entire ear slightly behind the right side of the head. Make sure you can still see both ears to the front of the bunny (0:53s).
Attach the triangular shape just under the bunny’s face (1:03s).
Proceed to glue both arms. Do not place glue on the entire arm. Leave the hands free (1:17).
Place the long, green, flower stem inside both arms. Use a little glue to keep it in place. The stem passes under the second ear (1:25s).
Fold the trapezium shape in half and allow the top of the shape to meet the base. Next, put glue only on the top half of the shape and stick it behind the bunny’s head in the center. This will allow your bunny to pop up(1:44s).
Next, let’s work with Package B
Use your scissors to curve each petal (1:59s).
Each flower should have two layers of petals. The second layer should be a different colour from the first. The pointy side of the petal is attaching to the center. Do not stick the petals all the way around the center of the flower, only halfway. Use 9 petals on the first layer. When you are finished sticking the first layer of petals, move on to the second layer. Stick these petals using a different colour in the spaces created by the first layer of petals. Repeat this step for the next two flowers (2:11s).
Stick a cylinder under each flower. This will allow the flower to stand (2:39s).
Let’s move on to Package C
On your Mounting Board, colour the body of the butterfly that’s under the bunny’s left foot, in a colour of your choice. Then stick the four pieces to match each shape of the outlined wings. Only stick part of each wing down. leave the ends of each wing free to create a 3-dimensional look (2:50s).
Stick the two bunches of grass on either side of the bunny. Use the guidelines on the Mounting Board to help you place the grass accurately. Only stick the base of the grass; leave the top free (2:55s).
Let’s continue to Package D
Use your scissors to cut a little more than halfway down the lines of each fence block. Do not separate the fence (3:04s).
Weave the long rectangular strip inside the fence strips. When you reach the end of the weaving, glue either ends to hold the shape in place (3:18s).
Connect the signpost to the third strip on the right of the fence (6:13s).
Stick the wing and tail on each bird. Next, stick one bird on top of the signpost and the next bird on the third fence strip on the left (3:46 - 4:19s).
Not much longer now! Let’s put together Package E
Place glue around the circumference of the sun (4:42s).
Attach the rays around the entire circle. Create a pattern with the different sizes, by placing a short ray after every long ray (6:47s).
Glue the short, cylinder-shaped stand behind the sun at the center (4:53s).
We are almost completed! It’s time to assemble each section on the Mounting Board.
Use the outline as a guide to place the pieces correctly.
Start with the sun first (5:00s).
Move on to the fence. Only place glue on the base near the end of the fence (5:07s).
Next, make sure to open the stand for the bunny and glue the top part of half of the stand (5:16s).
Attach the flowers. The tallest flower should be placed next to the bunny’s ears (5:31 - 5:48s).
Well done! Your 3D scenery piece is completed!
