Colored Pencil Drawing “Home”
"Home", a reflection of my country Trinidad and Tobago. On the surface, this piece is a clear depiction of the most beautiful aspects of the islands. It clearly illustrates the Buccoo Reef of Tobago, as well as the Pitch Lake and leatherback turtle known to Trinidad. It also includes the national birds and flowers of the islands. I played with the elements of water and earth, to highlight the dependency of the islands on each other. One cannot exist without the other. Like earth, Trinidad offers a strong foundation, with regards to its financial, industrial, and commercial aspects. While Tobago is the tourist destination. It is calming, relaxing, and peaceful. Very much like water. Both islands have distinct features of equal necessity. Additionally, the piece depicts the relationship between sisters and the unbreakable bond they share. The islands are often referred to as “twin islands” and I like to think of them as twin sisters. Hence the reason I placed the portraits leaning against each other. It shows the strength between twins. They are stronger together than apart. Traditionally in Trinidad and Tobago, it was popular for women to carry baskets on their heads when returning from the market with goods. I was inspired to fashion the headpieces to hint a sense of nostalgia. Placing the islands on the head of two females also addresses the strength of women. When faced with heavy burdens, we maintain grace and poise, not allowing hardships to dictate our future.
